The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) is constructing two water wells and supporting facilities at the northwest corner of Woodlands Parkway and Grogans Mill Road. Water consumption in this water service area has significantly increased over recent years to the extent that the wells that serve this area no longer provide enough water to keep pace with the increased demand. ( Map of this service area can be viewed by clicking here.) The near-term solution is to drill two additional water wells to provide the needed water. The long-term solutions will be to reduce our reliance on groundwater, with the gradual introduction of surface water from Lake Conroe and reduce peak daily water demands through water conservation.
During the construction of these wells, a drilling rig will drill each well and install pumps and piping. Though most of the drilling activities will take place during normal construction hours, each well will require a period of time where 24-hour operations are necessary. Once the wells are drilled, a second contractor will be onsite to construct a building, fence, and pipes to connect the wells to the existing water supply system. The site entrance will be from Grogans Mill Road so construction vehicles and equipment on Shell Port Square will be minimized.
We recognize that drilling a groundwater well can be a noisy operation with a drill rig running the work day and for 24 hours a day during peak construction periods. Realizing this fact, the SJRA hired an independent acoustics engineering firm to assess the noise for this project and design a noise barrier that will be used during construction. The sound barrier is located between the project site and Shell Port Square and will reduce the noise impact to the nearby residents by reducing the noise from drilling operations and some of the road noise from Woodlands Parkway. After the wells are installed, the SJRA will be installing a permanent noise abatement system.
